Workshop: Balkan Historiography: From Ottomans to the XXth Century

In cooperation with Fettah Efendi Association, Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities and Marmara University Institute of Middle East and Islamıc Countries Studies will organize a Balkan Historiography Workshop between 22-24 October 2021 in Istanbul.

The history of Balkan geography, as the east of the West and the west of the East, has produced the intertwined ground of political, economic, cultural, border, and military intersections. The diversity and competition of Kingdoms, Empires, national states, and supranational structures was never lacking. Different approaches, cultures, religions, sects, identities, political and economic structures have restructured this affluent cooperation/confrontation legacy by reconstructing “history”. Fundamental areas of inquiry of historiography such as “Balkan geography”, historical sources, the problem of periodization, approaches, themes, and the diversity of debates began to gain depth in Balkan historiography. This workshop aims to investigate the fundamental framework of Balkan historiography from the Ottomans to the 20th century and to reveal an introductory work to the Balkan historiography literature.

Workshop languages are English and Turkish (if necessary, it can be held in Albanian and Bosnian presentations.). The transportation and accommodation expenses of the participants will be covered by the workshop organizing committee.
